Silicone Implants Legal Again – Still Can Be Lethal If They Leak

Silicone implants can leak or rupture, causing fibromyalgia. Silicone implants require costly, lifelong checkups. Choose saline implants over silicone implants. In 1992 the FDA banned silicone implants but in 2007 the FDA made silicone implants legal again. Saline implants (salt water) were never banned. Are you really getting so much more from silicone implants to risk all the problems silicone implants cause?

Silicone Implants and Fibromyalgia

According to the FDA, “Women with MRI-diagnosed extracapsular silicone gel (silicone that migrated outside the fibrous scar around the implant) were 2.8 times more likely to report that they had the soft tissue syndrome called fibromyalgia. This association remained statistically significant after taking into account other factors including whether women thought their implants were ruptured, implant age, and implant manufacturer. Fibromyalgia is a syndrome characterized by widespread pain, fatigue, and sleep disturbance.”

Silicone Implants Are A Lifetime of Problems and Expense

In the FDA’s 2006 press release on its approval of silicone implants, the FDA informs the public,

” Rupture of a silicone gel-filled breast implant is most often silent, which means that usually neither the woman nor her surgeon will know that her implants have ruptured; and a woman will need regular screening and MRI examinations over her lifetime to determine if silent rupture has occurred. The device labeling states that a woman should have her first MRI three years after her initial implant surgery and then every two years thereafter. The cost of MRI screening over a woman’s lifetime may exceed the cost of her initial surgery and may not be covered by medical insurance. The labeling also states that if implant rupture is noted on an MRI, the implant should be removed and replaced, if needed.”

Knowing the very significant health risk of silicone implant leak and rupture, and knowing a leak is essentially no different than a silicone injection, and knowing that silicone injections are illegal, why would silicone implants be legal again? New silicone implants are very, very tough.

A television show named “Manswers” showed a baseball being thrown at a silicone implant and the silicone implant wasn’t damaged. A silicone implant was cooked in a microwave oven for an hour and no damage. Manswers did show silicone implants are NOT bulletproof.
